 Hill House has remained empty except for daily visits by grumbling caretaker Mrs. Dudley. Dr.Montague arrives to investigate supernatural phenomena and delve into occult forces that have made the house uninhabitable for years. He is joined by three others. They too are absorbed by the supernatural and attempt direct communication with the departed spirits. Their efforts bring on a crisis in which the evil forces of Hill House are goaded into a near fatal fury for one of the guests.
